Diodes Incorporated

Bluetooth® / WiFi

Many consumer electronic devices support a wireless interface, typically Bluetooth for personal area network (PAN) access and Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth multimedia connectivity. Diodes Incorporated offers advanced timing and connectivity technology solutions to address the numerous challenges designers of portable and handheld wireless access points (WAP) and PC-related products face in implementing these interfaces:

Maintaining Signal Integrity of High Frequency Signals:

The new 802.11ac high-bandwidth Wi-Fi standard provides up to 5 Gbps for the wireless transport of video. At high frequencies, however, signal integrity becomes much more difficult to maintain, and developers must minimize losses across the entire signal chain.

To help developers achieve the highest performance and reliability, Diodes Incorporated offers 40 MHz crystal oscillators for Wi-Fi applications that have already been individually optimized for the best performance with core chipsets from major Wi-Fi manufacturers. Each XO is part of a reference design created by Diodes Incorporated and a specific manufacturer to provide a proven solution that simplifies design and accelerates time-to-market.

Combination Wi-Fi / Bluetooth:

For devices that support both wireless interfaces, components must provide support for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi while offering higher integration to optimize power consumption and minimize system size. The majority of crystal oscillators, however, support only 26 MHz or 40 MHz and either differential or CMOS output.

Diodes Incorporated unique family of ASSP XOs utilize a clipped sin wave output that lowers power consumption by 50% and reduces EMI by 30% compared to CMOS, without sacrificing performance or reliability. These crystal oscillators also support a variety of frequencies, ranging from 10 to 60 MHz, to match the needs of your application.

Power Efficiency:

Power efficiency of the wireless subsystem is a major design consideration for every portable or handheld application. To minimize standby power efficiency, wireless systems utilize a 32 kHz clock to keep the system in a standby mode at the lowest power consumption.

For designs needing the highest power efficiency, especially those based on the new Low-Energy Bluetooth standard that requires even greater system optimization to achieve compliance, Diodes Incorporated offers its KX series of 32 kHz crystal oscillators. These XOs blend the low power advantages of tuning fork based XOs with the fast start-up time of AT-Cut XOs to provide:

  • Industry-leading power consumption < 10 µA to extend battery operating life
  • Fast start-up time of < 10 ms to maximize the time the CPU can spend in sleep mode, further reducing power consumption
  • Tight frequency stability over temperature of 20 to 50 ppm to reduce time error and increase long-term system reliability.

Diodes Incorporated PCIe packet switches offer a reliable and low-cost method for fanning out ports for wireless chipsets. In addition, Diodes Incorporated provides buffers to enable efficient fan-out of clock signals, including its FlexOut family of buffers. These devices offer:

  • Single-chip buffering compared to traditional architectures which require multiple buffers, clock sources, or level shifting
  • Flexible output type with pin-selectable LVPECL.LVDS/HCSL outputs and dual independent banks to accommodate design changes with no software required
  • High performance up to 1.5 GHz with the industry’s lowest additive jitter of 0.03 ps to minimize signal degradation and provide more jitter margin for designs
  • Up to 10 output options, enabling integration of XOs and multiple buffers into a single device to reduce BOM cost, simple board design, and shrink system size.

Diodes Incorporated is a true alternate source of timing and frequency control products (FCP) with its own oscillator manufacturing capabilities.  Its vertically integrated supply chain offers OEMs the benefits of in-house design, mass production and supply capacity, consistent quality control, excellent lead time, and superior cost.
