Compact PCI (cPCI) is a line card based chassis built to an industry standard mechanical and electrical specification. A typical cPCI system is comprised of System Board and Peripheral Line Cards. The cPCI chassis uses PCI for the control plane, and allows the builder to provide proprietary data plane, depending on the application. Most data planes are high speed serial connections. The advantage of using a cPCI chassis is that an industry supply base of mechanical and electrical components exists to support rapid design and deployment of the platform.
cPCI is used by many higher-end market segments:
- Industrial PC - industrial control systems,
industrial automation
- Telecom and Datacom - DSLAM, Router, Switch,
3G Station
- Storage - SAN, Blade Server, Data Center, RAID

- Instrumentation - data acquisition, data control module
